3. Select 1 or 2 digital tools you might use to support learning.
4. Take some time to explore the technology (15 minutes).
5. Describe how you'd support the student's learning using the digital tool you've selected and share with the class.
Practice Scenarios
Student 1 (ESL): Berker just started a new job and has had difficulty adjusting to his work schedule. As a result, your tutoring sessions together are often cancelled last minute, or you have to pull a lesson together very quickly in order to accommodate Berker's availability. How might you integrate digital tools into your tutoring sessions with him to support Berker's language learning and to create a better experience for both of you?
Student 2 (Literacy): Emily loves reading books to her grandchildren. However, lately her motivation during tutoring sessions appears to be waning. It also feels that her progress has plateaued. How might technology help to reinvigorate Emily's love of reading and propel her literacy progress forward?
Student 3 (ESL): Svetlana is a recent immigrant and a beginning language student. She has had difficulty understanding how to get around her new town. Her children begin school soon, so she comes to today's tutoring session with lots of questions about where important places in town are located. What digital tools might you use to support her desire to learn and to build her language skills in the process?
Student 4 (Literacy): Felix would like to study to be a certified medical assistant (CMA). He is trying to get a job in the healthcare field to gain some hands on experience in a medical setting. In previous sessions he has written a resume and cover letter but is nervous to send them out to potential employers. Today he tells you his big concern is that they will actually call him for an interview-- what will he say? How can you use a digital tool or two to ease Felix's fears today while supporting his literacy goals?

Activity B: Generating your own examples
Take some time to think about a recent "moment of need" you experienced with your tutoring student. Define your student's need and think about what technologies you've seen or heard about today that might support your student in reaching his or her immediate language and literacy goals.
